Date & Time: 02/25/2020, 2356 EST
Registration: N135LR
Aircraft: Learjet 55
Aircraft Damage: Substantial
Defining Event: Runway excursion
Injuries: 5 None
Flight Conducted Under: Part 135: Air Taxi & Commuter - Non-scheduled

At the conclusion of an uneventful on-demand, instrument flight rules flight at night, the flight crew of the business jet conducted an instrument approach to a runway that was about 7,300 feet long. The crew noted that the weather conditions during the approach included fog and mist, and after touching down about 1,500 feet from the runway threshold, they applied the brakes and thrust reversers gradually due to the "slippery" condition of the runway. As the airplane approached the end of the runway, the crew applied full braking, but the airplane departed the end of the runway and came to rest on the side of an embankment. During the runway overrun the fuselage was substantially damaged. The flight crew reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures of the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

WALL - Things could have been much worse for the people aboard a jet that skidded off the runway onto the edge of a hillside at Monmouth Executive Airport in Wall on Tuesday night, an airport official said.

What saved them was the runway, said Rita Spader, the airport's director. "If it wasn't for our 7,500-foot runway, things could have been much worse."

The three passengers and two crew members on the plane were uninjured, Spader said.

The plane, a Learjet 55, was pulled Wednesday from the hillside by the same crane operator who pulled Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's US Airways passenger jet from the Hudson River in 2009, Spader said.

The plane was towed to a hangar where the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation.

The FAA did not respond to calls about the incident, and the NTSB had nothing on record about it as of 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The Learjet 55 has a cruising speed of 285 mph and a range of 2,492 miles. This particular airplane was made in 1982 and refurbished in 2013. It seats seven.

The jet was coming in from Richmond, Virginia, at 11:56 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to Spader.

When the passengers requested the flight from Virginia to New Jersey, the pilot, who has 45 years of flying experience, suggested flying into Teterboro Airport because of low-visibility at Monmouth, Spader said.

But the passengers, who are Monmouth locals, insisted on flying to the Wall airport, she s

The airport was closed until after the plane was removed around noon Wednesday.

According to records, the private jet is owned by Expectra Aviation Inc., a corporation out of Dover, Delaware. It is managed by AP Global Jets.

"The brakes were fine and the maintenance of the plane was perfect," said Raul Hernandez, who cleans the planes for AP Global Jet. He said the company is fully cooperating with the FAA's investigation.

Hernandez said the slickness of the runway was most likely the reason the plane slid onto the hillside.
