Sailor shot and killed by security at Naval Air Station Oceana

VIRGINIA BEACH

A U.S. Navy sailor has died after he was shot by Naval Air Station Oceana security officers late Friday night.

It started with a report to Virginia Beach Police of a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Dam Neck and Drakesmile roads just before 10 p.m., according to information from the Virginia Beach Police Department.

Police responded to find the victim of the hit-and-run and got a description of the vehicle. While canvassing the scene, officers noticed damage to Gate 2 at Naval Air Station Oceana near London Bridge Road.

VBPD officers proceeded onto the base and contacted base security. When NAS Oceana security responded at 10:15 p.m., they found a man at the scene.

Navy spokeswoman Jennifer Colaizzi wrote in an email that a security officer then fired his gun for "his safety and the safety of other personnel in the area."

The man, identified as a Navy sailor, was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Further details about the circumstances of the shooting have not been released, nor has the identity of the sailor.

The incident was still under investigation Saturday morning.

Access to Hornet Drive, which connects London Bridge Road to Gate 2 at NAS Oceana, was blocked on Saturday morning.
