AIRCRAFT FORCE LANDED ON A HIGHWAY, NEAR MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MISSOURI.

MARYLAND HEIGHTS •  A pilot landed his small plane on Page Avenue on Monday after the aircraft developed engine failure, police say.

The plane didn't collide with any cars. Neither the pilot nor a passenger in the plane was injured.

The pilot, Alan Kreppert, was practicing touch-and-go landings at Creve Coeur Airport about 9 p.m. Monday when the plane began having engine problems, according to Maj. Joseph Delia, deputy chief of the Maryland Heights Police Department.

Delia said the pilot did not think he could make it back to the airport so he landed on the highway. The plane landed in the eastbound lanes of Page just west of the Maryland Heights Expressway, according to police.

The plane was towed back to Creve Coeur Airport. Delia said the FAA went to the scene and is investigating the incident.

The site where the plane landed is just southeast of the privately owned Creve Coeur Airport, which serves small aircraft.

Two years ago, another small plane crashed in the same general area, near a bicycle trail just west of Page Avenue. The pilot was able to climb out of the wreckage and was not seriously injured. He told police he had just taken off from Creve Coeur Airport for a flight to Kentucky when he noticed a warning light about the cargo door. As he was looping back to return to the runway, his left engine failed.
