NTSB investigators used data provided by various entities, including, but not limited to, the Federal Aviation Administration and/or the operator and did not travel in support of this investigation to prepare this aircraft accident report.
The pilot reported that during the landing roll on a rough grass private strip, the airplane impacted a "little bump" and became airborne. He reported that he elected to abort the landing due to the end of the runway and trees that were "coming up pretty fast".
The pilot further reported that he knew the airplane would not be able to climb and turn at the same time due to the low airspeed. He elected to turn right, and subsequently impacted a fence post with the right wing strut. The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings, and the fuselage.
According to the pilot there were no pre-impact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine that would have precluded normal operation.
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
The pilot's decision to continue the unstabilized approach and landing and his delayed decision to go around with an insufficient climb rate, which resulted with collision with trees.
BARBER COUNTY - Two people were hurt in a single-engine plane crash reported late Wednesday, December 3, 2015 in Barber County.
Barber County Sheriff Justin Rugg said the single engine plane went down near 160th and Bethel Road around 4:55 p.m.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reports the pilot was attempting to land the plane when the crash occurred. The pilot tried to pull back when part of the plane caugt a fence, flipped and came to a rest on its top.
Sheriff Rugg said the plane landed in a hedgerow, about 50 yards south of the railroad tracks on Bethel Road.
The pilot and passenger were on the plane. Both were taken to Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital by someone who was passing by.
The pilot, identified as 71-year-old Gary Wright, of Medicine Lodge, received possible serious injuries in the crash. A four-year-old passenger received minor injuries.
The Federal Aviation Administration was notified about the crash.

BARBER COUNTY – Two people were injured in a small plane crash just before 5p.m. on Wednesday in Barber County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the Stinson 1946 single-engine fixed wing aircraft piloted by Wright, Gary Wright, 71, Medicine Lodge, was attempting to land the aircraft at Southeast Bethel Road, just south of U.S. 160 four miles east of Medicine Lodge.
The pilot tried to pull the plane back up when part of the plane caught a fence, flipped over and came to rest on its top.
A private vehicle transported Wright and a passenger Asher Willerton, 4, to the hospital in Medicine Lodge.
They were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.
The accident remains under investigation.
