Distress call from Hays County, Texas, missing plane may have been from drone

HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Hays County Emergency Management Coordinator Kahrley Smith says the county has discontinued the search for what was believed to have been a downed plane.

Just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office received word of a “small plane” that had put out a mayday call.

Deputies have not received reports of a crash, said Lt.Jeri Skrocki, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.

A STARFlight helicopter helped with the search until about 10:30 p.m. The crew focused on an area near Concord Circle and Royal Way, but were unable to locate the missing aircraft.

According to STARFlight spokeswoman Lisa Block, authorities were not sure if the signal being emitted was from a plane at all, suggesting it could be from a drone.

The search could resume dependent on if the county receives further information about an emergency situation.
