New Hampton Municipal (1Y5), Iowa: Airport foundation to hold fly-in, drive-in breakfast

The New Hampton Airport Foundation will hold its first annual pancake fly-in and drive in breakfast on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 7-11 a.m. to raise money to repair the runway.

New Hampton Airport Foundation Treasurer Jason Lahmann said this fundraiser is a way to get the community involved.

Lahmann is hoping the breakfast sees about 30 planes stopping in to show their support and eat breakfast with the community.

As well as holding the breakfast, the foundation is holding a rifle raffle and selling tickets for a Henry Golden Boy Rifle or $300. Tickets are being sold 6 for $5.

Runway renovations will cost about $500,000 and it is the foundation’s goal to raise $180,000, which can then be matched by the state.

The runway has been needed to be fixed for some time now and Lahmann said while Airport Commission Director Rich Grote has done a good job maintaining the airport it has a lot of dips that need to be fixed.

The community has really stepped up for the airport foundation with Klunder’s Kafe being a big sponsor and donating pancake mix, sausage and syrup.

Fareway in New Hampton also donated a $50 gift certificate to the foundation to be used on whatever other materials they need.

Airport Foundation member Dan Scott says the group appreciates every bit of support they can get.

Also available on Saturday will be airplane rides around New Hampton for just $35. Lahmann said airplane rides are fairly typical for fly-in breakfasts.

At the breakfast there will be information available on how to join for help volunteer for the airport foundation.

Scott said he still remembers his very first plane ride event though it took place a long, long time ago.

“Something like that really sticks in your brain,” Scott said and he encourages the community to come out and take a ride.

Scott was proud to say the hangers located at the airport are currently full and any activities that are held at the airport and bring people to New Hampton is good for the community.

“It is a real asset for people to use,” said Scott.

Many events take place out at the airport grounds including the model airplane rally, tractor pull, horse shows and soccer camps and practices.

Crop sprayers that are spraying locally also get quite a bit of use out of the airport.

This event will happen rain or shine.
