King Air 200 and King Air 300: Gov. Robert Bentley's re-election campaign is flying high, literally

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Gov. Robert Bentley has a couple of new rides to help him court votes across Alabama.

They are private planes – a King Air 200 and a King Air 300.

The Bentley for Governor Campaign is leasing the turboprops for campaign trips.

Bentley's Democratic opponent, Parker Griffith, has criticized Bentley's use of state aircraft, charging Bentley has used them to campaign. Bentley said that is not true. He has used state aircraft but only on official business, he said.

"We always planned to lease a plane for the campaign.   It has nothing to do with what my opponent has said," Bentley said. "We have only used the state plane for official business. I couldn't do the job of governor without a plane. But we have not used it for the campaign."

Bentley said with less than two months to go in the race the time has come to lease a plane.

A spokesperson for Bentley's campaign said that the first invoice for the use of the private planes has just come in. She did not immediately have the cost of what the aircraft costs. She said that cost will be available when the governor files his campaign financial report later this month.

The spokesperson said which of the two planes is used depends on which is available. She said both have reputations for efficiency and safety. Costs depend on the flight and distance involved.

Paying the rent for the new rides should not be a problem for the governor. His last financial campaign report showed he had raised over $5 million in donations for his re-election.
