Planes put on dazzling display at Golden West Airshow: Yuba County Airport (KMYV), Marysville, California

Trevor Plant, 3, center, of Yuba City and his brother, Tyler, 18 months look at airplanes during the Golden West Regional Fly-In and Airshow Friday, June 6, 2014 at the Yuba County Airport in Olivehurst.

Trevor Plant stood on the tarmac staring at airplanes.

Out of sight, a pilot started up an engine, and the three-year-old quickly swiveled around to see what plane it was.

"Trevor loves airplanes," said Adam Plant, Trevor's father, who was at the Yuba County Airport with his wife, Brooke, and their other son, Tyler, 18 months.

It was their first time at an air show, and both boys were taking in the sights and sounds.

Friday marked the first day of the Golden West Regional Fly-In and Airshow, which runs through Sunday.

The acrobatic airshow will start at noon, but events will be happening from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Steve Stavrakakis is opening the show today in his Romanian plane with an acrobatic routine.

Then Stavrakakis, who has been part of the local air show since 1995, will step out of his plane and announce the event.

"When I'm performing, I know how I want them to announce for me," said Stavrakakis. "I know what parts they need to emphasize and what parts they need to just let the plane fly."

Stavrakakis, of Salida, has been flying in and announcing air shows for 28 years

"Wearing both hats, I try to do the announcing job for them that I'd want them to do for me," Stavrakakis said.

Stavrakakis said seeing millions of dollars of aviation technology for just a couple of dollars is a great opportunity.

"Pilots are approachable," said Stavrakakis. "The only thing they like doing more than flying their plane is talking about their planes," he added with a smile.

"Sunday will be a fun day," said airport manager Mary Hansen.

Hansen said in addition to the air show, there will be car show and remote-controlled plane show, neither of which was a part of previous events.
