Incident occurred June 22, 2014 at Des Moines International Airport (KDSM), Iowa

Empty plane damaged after rolling into ground equipment

An empty commercial airplane suffered damage after it rolled into some ground equipment at the Des Moines International Airport on Sunday, officials said.

The Allegiant airplane was in the process of being moved when the collision occurred Sunday, said Craig Stephens, Des Moines International Airport operations supervisor.

The MD-83 plane had an issue with its brakes, and began to roll after being disconnected from its tug, said Allegiant spokesperson Micah Lillard.

The plane crashed into ground equipment, which caused damage to its left wing. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the brakes issue, Lillard said.

The damaged plane is still on the ground, and is expected to be there for the rest of the week.
