Fort Drum Apache helicopter performs precautionary landing in Evans Mills field

EVANS MILLS — Possible transmission problems led to a precautionary landing Thursday for an Apache helicopter from Fort Drum in a field near the intersection of County Route 46 and Call Road.

The helicopter landed at about 11:03 a.m., according to county dispatch.

Capt. Peter K. Smedberg, a public affairs officer with the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, said crews are still assessing the helicopter’s status, and whether it would be able to fly back to post. The two pilots in the aircraft were not injured, he said.

They landed the helicopter in the middle of a grassy field after a warning light came on during a routine flight training. The closest building was approximately half a mile away.
