"It's huge," said County Administrator Gary Breedlove. "It's 28,000 square feet. It's structurally sound, but it's got a lot of work that still needs to be done to put it back to its state from 70 years ago."
After months of planning and with the help of federal and state grants, as well as a generous donation from a local resident, officials in Bainbridge are now one step closer to doing just that! Renovations of the W.W.II hangar will officially begin within the next few days.
"We have enough money to do what we are now calling, 'Phase One' which basically is to fix the roof, make sure the roof is secure, and to do the front, or what we call the South end of the hangar."
That includes restoring the windows, doors, and lighting back to its original architecture.
Officials say they hope the makeover will attract more people to the airport, as well as the city.
"It'll generate some traffic, generate some interest and it may be something, I believe, will at least in someway contribute to our economic development in the community," added Breedlove.
And the hangar isn't the only tribute to the past; the lettering on the nearby water tower was recently changed to read: 'Bainbridge Army Airfield 1942.'
Breedlove says Phase One is expected to be complete by Fall 2013.
