Search and rescue teams have been stood down after reports came in of a flare being fired off the coast north of Oamaru.
Waitaki Aero Club says all of its small aircraft are accounted for.
Central South Island Rescue Helicopter earlier said it had one helicopter searching with a police officer on board.
