Explosion at air show: Omaka Classic Fighters

One person is being flown to Wellington hospital in a serious condition after a gas canister exploded at the Omaka Classic Fighters Airshow this evening, says a Wairau Hospital spokesperson.

Two other people were treated for burns and discharged shortly after.

No further details of the patients could be released until family were informed, the spokesperson said.

The air show safety officer Aaron Marshall said the disposable gas canister from a small gas cooker exploded about 8pm, and three members of the show’s re-enactment team were taken to Wairau Hospital by St Johns Ambulance.

“Something went wrong, and the gas canister exploded, we don’t know what at this stage, but will be investigating what went wrong.”

The St John’s Ambulance and fire brigade arrived on the scene within two minutes of the explosion, he said.
