EDITORIAL: Another airport cash clash: Miracle Strip Aviation at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, Destin, Florida

Political corruption isn’t the only problem gnawing at Okaloosa County government. Another is simple carelessness. We learned recently that Miracle Strip Aviation, one of two fixed-base operators at Destin Airport, owes the county $485,382 in back rent and other fees — partly because the county sent the company incorrect bills for about five years.

From 2006 to early 2011, Miracle Strip Aviation received invoices from the county that didn’t reflect the full lease payments due. An auditor discovered the error.
Now, Miracle Strip Aviation and county staffers are trying to work out a payment plan.

County Commission Chairman Don Amunds told the Daily News’ Kari Barlow the county should do what it can to keep Miracle Strip Aviation in business. “With two FBOs out there,” he said, “it’s important to keep both of them healthy” so as to promote competition.

That’s one way to put it. Here’s our way: The county should do what it can to rectify its own billing error, to make sure it doesn’t happen again, and to display a level of professionalism too often lacking.
