Decorah Municipal (KDEH), Iowa: City Council OKs airport improvement plan

DECORAH, Iowa --- The Decorah Municipal Airport's five-year capital improvement plan could leverage about $1.63 million in state and federal funding over five years, according to City Manager Chad Bird.

Members of the City Council recently approved the plan, recommended by the Decorah Airport Commission and required by the Federal Aviation Administration and Iowa Department of Transportation.

The outline focuses on corporate hangars and renovation and improvements to other hangars but includes new terminals, according to Bird. The city can apply for FAA grants that pay 90 percent of projects. Decorah would provide a 10 percent match, or $188,750.

Corporations typically put up their own hangars and lease the buildings for an extended period, Bird said.

"At the end of the lease, the hangar reverts to the airport," he added.

A local corporation has talked to the airport commission about a hangar, according to Bird.
