Banyuwangi improving airport, soon to open Jakarta-Banyuwangi route

The Banyuwangi administration in East Java says that it is improving its airport and supporting infrastructure so that the Banyuwangi-Jakarta route can be launched this year. The plan will cost Rp 13 billion (US$1.34 million).

The plan includes expanding the airport’s runway from 1,400 meters to 1,800 meters and expanding the parking area from 2,400 square meters to 4,800 square meters.

“The airport will be able to accommodate two medium-sized airplanes [simultaneously],” Banyuwangi Transportation Agency head for sea and air transportation Ali Ruchi said on Sunday as quoted by tempo.co.

Ali said that a number of airlines had expressed interest in serving the Banyuwangi-Jakarta route, including Sriwijaya Air, Merpati Nusantara and Lion Air.

“However, they have yet to apply for a permit,” he said.

The Banyuwangi airport currently serves airplanes on the Banyuwangi-Surabaya route.
