On July 21, 2012, at 1500 central daylight time, an unregistered and float-equipped, amateur built-experimental Eipper Quicksilver MXL Sport II airplane, sustained substantial damage after a total loss of engine power while maneuvering around Lake Shinanguag near Atlas Township, Michigan. The unlicensed pilot sustained minor injuries and his passenger was seriously hurt. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the personal flight conducted under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91.

The pilot reported that he was taking his grand daughter on a local flight and departed from the lake. Shortly after departure, the pilot realized it was turbulent so he made a left turn downwind to land. While on the downwind leg, the engine stopped producing power and he was unable to reach the water. The pilot slowed the airplane and landed in a tree adjacent to the water's edge.

According to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records, the pilot was issued a student pilot certificate on October 25, 2004, and it had expired on October 31, 2006. He did not have an FAA medical certificate. The pilot reported that he had never received any flight training in the QuickSilver MXL Sport II but, had accumulated total time of approximately 110 hours. Approximately 80 of those hours was in the accident airplane. The airplane had not been issued an FAA airworthiness certificate.

ATLAS TOWNSHIP, MI – What appears to be an ultralight plane crashed through a tree and into a home in the 9400 block of Island Drive in Atlas Township.

The Atlas Township Fire Department and Genesee County Sheriff's Department were at the scene of the crash that happened around 3 p.m. Saturday. The small craft was carrying a young girl and a male pilot, who witness said was her grandfather.

Charmaine Kerchner, the owner of the home, said the man walked away from the crash but the girl was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Kerchner's husband, Bob, also was injured by shattering glass when the small craft crashed through a tree and into the backside of their home.

"We were sitting in our sunroom and we had decided to sit inside instead of exactly where the plane came." Charmaine Kerchner said. "So within three minutes of our sitting down in our sunroom, I turned around and I said to Bob: 'Look here comes a plane.'

"I thought it would hit the trees, but it went through the trees and came right into the house, shattered all the glass. The deck is broken. The siding is broken. It's a mess. The tree hit my husband and the glass shattered all over him. He was solid blood and I was scared to death but we're fine. We're going to be ok and all this can be fixed."

Kerchner said the young girl remained in the two seater plane for close to 30 minutes before rescuers could get her out.

"I just hope the little girl is going to be fine," Kerchner said. "I also thank God because we would have been sitting right there."

The Genesee County Sheriff's Department declined to comment at this time and said further information would be released at a later date.
