Teenagers uninjured after plane crash

A 14-YEAR-OLD German girl and a  19-year-old Nelspruit pilot miraculously escaped with hardly any injuries after an emergency landing at the Mbombela Stadium in a Bantam plane.

Stella Coniglio, daughter of Liqui Moly Oils’ German-based director, was on a sight-seeing flip with Jurie Piso Jnr on Monday afternoon when the plane’s engine failed on their way back over the stadium.

Piso, an experienced pilot, remained calm and immediately aimed for a safe strip on one of the parking bays behind the stadium, but his speed was too high and he had to make another plan.

“I then aimed for the gravel piece of parking area behind the stadium, but because of the  crowd barriers my emergency landing ended up as a small crash landing,” Piso commented.

Coniglio said she only realized  there was trouble with their flight when Piso reported to the tower with the words “Mayday, Mayday”.

This was her first visit to the country with her dad Salvatore, who is a regular visitor to the Lowveld.

“This was his first aerial tour over the city. I wanted him to tell me what it was like, as I’d never flown before in such an aircraft,” a slightly shocked Coniglio said.

After the ordeal the two sat calmly and waited for the emergency personnel and police.

A formal investigation into the crash landing will be conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority. – CNS.
