Gary Jet Center has new tenant, one with international clients

GARY — From Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Dubai, United Arab Emirates or Tokyo, Japan.

Armstrong Aerospace, an Itasca, Ill.-based aviation engineering company with clients worldwide, has agreed to move part of its operations across the state line into Hangar II of the Gary Jet Center, located at the Gary/Chicago International Airport.

Jet Center officials declined to comment, and officials from Armstrong were not available for comment, nor were city officials.

According to its Website, Armstrong designs, manufactures and installs amenities such as wi-fi Internet hook-ups, mobile phones, satellite TV and inflight video systems, and navigation, communication and flight safety upgrades.

In a letter to Steve Landry, interim director of the airport, Patrick Lee, describing himself as an agent of the Gary Jet Center, wrote that bringing Armstrong into the Jet Center will mean “more traffic, flowage fees and eventually more jobs at (the airport).”

The work Armstrong will bring to the Jet Center hangar will be from contracts with Virgin and United Airlines to handle “in-seat initial installations and upgrades,” though no one at the center would discuss the matter.

“We’re also excited about the potential of our new tenant to add significantly to the aviation industry’s visibility at (the Gary airport),” Lee wrote.

Additional information and schedules for Armstrong’s operations at the airport were not available.
