Fiji: Government withdraws Rotuma airport upgrade funds

$10 million allocated for the sealing and upgrading of the Rotuma airstrip has been diverted towards the upgrade of the Nausori Airport.

Airports Fiji Limited Chair Adrian Sofield told FBC News a $10m upgrade for an airstrip on island, and no accomodation - is not viable.

Sofield says upgrades to the existing facility will still be undertaken.

"Government has withdrawn those funds. We will still upgrade work at the existing strip. It can take a twin otter without any problems. Again an ATR flying there - Pacific Sun will not do that - it is not just economic"

Sofield adds it is important to get Nausori Airport to international standards given the ongoing development in Suva.
