US-registered Cessna 152 crash lands on Essequibo island of Wakenaam

A two-seater plane coming from Trinidad has crash-landed on the Essequibo island of Wakenaam with no injuries to the crew but the aircraft is said to have been damaged.

Police say the craft crash landed around 10 AM Wednesday. It landed in a rice field and reports say there is damage to the wheel and nose of the aircraft.

The US-registered single engine Cessna 152 was travelling from Piarco to Guyana for an onward journey to Boa Vista where it was to be delivered to a buyer. The journey had originated from Guadeloupe.

Local pilot Learie Barclay told demwaves.com that the Spanish pilot and co-pilot were Tuesday told in Piarco that given the plane’s range, endurance and the headwinds into Guyana it would not make it without ferry tanks. It is believed that the aircraft crash landed because it ran low on fuel. There were no ferry tanks on the aircraft.

Barclay noted that the plane only has a fuel capacity of 26 gallons and with the headwinds into Guyana that would have lasted only four hours.

He added that the plane landed in Trinidad on Tuesday with only 10 minutes of fuel remaining. Te required fuel reserve is 30 minutes. According to Barclay, the pilots were subsequently cautioned not to proceed without ferry tanks.
