Merpati Nusantara Airlines back to business after temporary paralysis

After a meeting mediated by the State Enterprises Ministry, state-owned PT Merpati Nusantara Airlines was finally back in the air with Pertamina agreeing to continue supplying fuel to the airline.

“We finally got fuel from Pertamina at around 3 p.m.,” Merpati president director Sardjono Jhony said in Jakarta on Saturday.

The State Enterprises Ministry presence had been the lynch pin in the new deal, he said.

Merpati had to cancel several flights on Saturday after Pertamina stopped supplying fuel to it at Juanda Airport in Surabaya, East Java, and Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

The stoppage disrupted Merpati’s flight schedule, especially in eastern Indonesia.

Sardjono said the company had been in arrears of Rp 2.73 billion (US$308,614) to Pertamina from August to October 2011.

Merpati has promised to settle its fuel debt after state management asset firm PT Perusahaan Pengelola Aset sures up its finances with a restructuring fund worth Rp 561 billion.
