Recreational Flying: North Alabama Aviation at Pryor Field Regional Airport (KDCU) Decatur, Alabama.

ELKMONT, AL -  Most car enthusiasts are familiar with "kit cars". You order the kit and put it together for a "replica" of a specific car, usually an antique.

What you might not know is there are also airplane kits for airplane enthusiasts.

WAFF 48 News spoke with one such airplane enthusiast in Limestone County.

Mark Spry is an aircraft mechanic at North Alabama Aviation at Pryor field.

"It's according to what the weather is and if I have errands I need to run on the way home or to work. 2 to 3 days I fly to work," said Mark Spry.

"it turns a 30 minute drive into an 8 minute flight," added Spry.

Spry has a private grass air field at his Elkmont home. He built his first plane from a kit in 1993, and then sold it and it went to Germany.

"It's a 2 place tandem aircraft, meaning one forward, one behind. It cruises at 180 knots, or 205 miles per hour. It has 180 horses on the engine and certified for aerobatics," said Spry when talking about a RV8, his second plane.

Mark Spry said he likes to fly recreationally, for his own pleasure.

"My wife enjoys flying with me. We take trips. She loves to go to gulf shores. It makes it an hour and a half trip from here," said Spry.

The plane spry uses is capable of visual or instrument flight rules.

"From here I don't have to contact any of the air facilities as long as I stay in uncontrolled air space, most of the airspace around this area is," explained Spry.

But the rules change if he goes to Huntsville, Birmingham or Nashville. He must first notify the FAA.

He says fuel is about $5 a gallon and the tank holds 40 gallons. The only extra expense on trips is if he rents a car.

Spry said it's one thing to build the planes, but the FAA determines whether or not they fly.
