Man fined by Federal Communications Commission

A Lewisburg man owes a $17,000 fine to the Federal Communications Commission for interfering with U.S. Coast Guard radio frequency.

David Edward Perka repeatedly operated without a license in the Maritime Radio Service and maliciously interfered with the Coast Guard on the International Distress, Safety and Calling Channel. In Annapolis, Md., an FCC document released Sept. 21 indicates. Although Perka holds an amateur radio operator license, he did not have clearance to operate in the Maritime Radio Service. FCC agents in Columbia, Md., said Perka committed the incidents on April 6-7, 2008, according to the document.

Perka’s April 6 transmissions consisted of threatening statements toward the Coast Guard. He was fined $17,000 by the FCC in 2009, and his request for a reduction based on his inability to pay was denied, the document said.

He has 30 days to pay the fine before the case is referred to the U.S. Department of Justice.
