Knoxville-bound plane diverted due to possible smoke in the cabin. Orlando Sanford International Airport (KSFB), Orlando, Florida.

A plane that was bound for Knoxville from Orlando, Florida earlier today returned to Sanford International Airport in Orlando because several passengers smelled smoke in the cabin.

Officials say that Allegiant Airlines flight 696 was scheduled to take off at 9:45 a.m. this morning, but was delayed for mechanical reasons.

When the flight returned to Orlando, Allegiant called in an extra plane to deliver the passengers to Knoxville Safely.

Airport officials say that this response was the standard procedure for situations like these.

No smoke was ever seen in the cabin, and airport fire units did not find any problems.

There were no injuries.
