The pilot reported that, during the approach, the airspeed was about 80 knots, but he was slightly high. The pilot stated that the airplane floated down the runway further than normal before it touched down, and when he determined that he would not have enough runway to stop, he aborted the landing. The airplane did not climb as he expected, and subsequently impacted trees. The pilot added that he believed that the reason for the lack of climb was due to his failure to retract the flaps to 50%.
A witness reported that the airplane landed further down the runway than normal, departed the runway, and began the takeoff from the grass alongside the runway.
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing.
The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Yeah I've used a ~2200' runway in a 172 with trees on both ends and there is very little wiggle room after clearing the obstacles on approach to get it down and stopped before deciding to go around. The Cirrus 20 requires significant faster approach speeds on final as well as takeoff than that of a 172 (more than 10kts faster for both).
ReplyDeleteThe book on a SR20 for takeoff over the 50' obstacle is 1,865' and the landing over the same is 1,960'. That left him about 900' to work with either way, which is not much in a fast mover (relatively speaking) when you screw around floating a landing then forgetting to raise the flaps on a go around.
