Analysis

The pilot reported that he and the copilot were conducting an instrument approach to the runway in a business jet. He noted that the weather conditions included fog and mist. After touching down about 1,500 ft down the 7,300-ft-long runway, he engaged the thrust reversers and applied the brakes gradually because the runway was "slippery." As the airplane approached the end of the runway, he applied full braking, but the airplane departed the end of the runway and impacted a ditch, which resulted in the forward landing gear breaking and the airplane nosing down. The copilot corroborated the pilot's statement. The fuselage was substantially damaged. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Probable Cause and Findings

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
The flight crew's failure to stop the airplane on the available runway, which was wet and resulted in the airplane impacting a ditch.

Findings

Personnel issues Aircraft control - Flight crew
Aircraft Landing distance - Capability exceeded
Environmental issues Wet surface - Effect on operation
Environmental issues Sloped/uneven terrain - Effect on operation
Personnel issues Delayed action - Flight crew

WALL - Things could have been much worse for the people aboard a jet that skidded off the runway onto the edge of a hillside at Monmouth Executive Airport in Wall on Tuesday night, an airport official said.

What saved them was the runway, said Rita Spader, the airport's director. "If it wasn't for our 7,500-foot runway, things could have been much worse."

The three passengers and two crew members on the plane were uninjured, Spader said.

The plane, a Learjet 55, was pulled Wednesday from the hillside by the same crane operator who pulled Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's US Airways passenger jet from the Hudson River in 2009, Spader said.

The plane was towed to a hangar where the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation.

The FAA did not respond to calls about the incident, and the NTSB had nothing on record about it as of 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The Learjet 55 has a cruising speed of 285 mph and a range of 2,492 miles. This particular airplane was made in 1982 and refurbished in 2013. It seats seven.

The jet was coming in from Richmond, Virginia, at 11:56 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to Spader.

When the passengers requested the flight from Virginia to New Jersey, the pilot, who has 45 years of flying experience, suggested flying into Teterboro Airport because of low-visibility at Monmouth, Spader said.

But the passengers, who are Monmouth locals, insisted on flying to the Wall airport, she s

The airport was closed until after the plane was removed around noon Wednesday.

According to records, the private jet is owned by Expectra Aviation Inc., a corporation out of Dover, Delaware. It is managed by AP Global Jets.

"The brakes were fine and the maintenance of the plane was perfect," said Raul Hernandez, who cleans the planes for AP Global Jet. He said the company is fully cooperating with the FAA's investigation.

Hernandez said the slickness of the runway was most likely the reason the plane slid onto the hillside.

  1. Apparently those passengers in Naples can be pretty persuasive at flight planning. 'The passengers...insisted'

  2. Aircraft management, charter companies and charter brokers take a back seat to supporting the flight crew and allow the customers to make the no/go decisions when it comes to flight planning to airports where weather is at mins and the airport is not served with adequate facilities (ex. runway, instrument approaches) Maybe its time this industry passes on the insurance cost to the customers over and above the going charter rate.

  3. Yeah ... If the pilot puts his foot down over a safety issue he is suddenly a 'Bad Player'.

  4. "The pilot, who has 45 years of flying experience, suggested flying into Teterboro Airport because of low-visibility at Monmouth. But the passengers, who are Monmouth locals, insisted on flying to the Wall airport, ..."

Those pushy passengers are very lucky to be alive. Maybe they'll do a better job listening next time. Maybe less stupid next time.

  5. "The Learjet 55 has a cruising speed of 285 mph" ... once again, the media shows it's total ignorance of any aviation related fact. A simple Google search would have shown the correct number is 527 mph and that total ignorance could have remained hidden.
