On August 31, 2019, about 1105 Pacific daylight time, a Cessna 510 airplane, N551WH, overran the departure end of runway 1 following a rejected takeoff at the San Gabriel Valley Airport (EMT), El Monte, California. The airline-transport pilot and pilot rated passenger sustained minor injuries and the airplane was substantially damaged. The airplane was registered to Star Jet LLC and the pilot was operating it as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and an instrument flight rules flight plan was filed. The flight was originating at the time of the accident and was destined for Thermal, California.
The pilot reported that after he taxied onto runway 1, a 3,995 ft long and 75 ft wide asphalt runway, he applied takeoff power. During the takeoff roll, he noticed that the airplane was not accelerating beyond about 70 knots and decided to abort the takeoff. The airplane subsequently veered to the left, exited the runway and came to rest upright about 800 ft beyond the departure end of runway 1.
Examination of the airplane by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed that the airplane came to rest upright at the airport perimeter fence. The fuselage and both wings were structurally damaged. The airplane was transported to a secure location for further examination.

A pilot and his passenger escaped with just minor injuries when their plane crashed as it left the runway Saturday at San Gabriel Valley Airport in El Monte.
Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to 4233 Santa Anita Ave. at 11:13 a.m., according to a Los Angeles County fire dispatcher.
The two occupants inside the plane were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries, he said.
The Cessna 510 Citation Mustang crashed into a fence at the end of runway, just as the airplane lost power prior to going airborne.

The pilot of a small plane was injured with the aircraft was forced to abort its takeoff and skidded off the runway Saturday at the San Gabriel Valley Airport in El Monte, authorities said.
El Monte Police Lt. Ernie Cramer said Saturday the pilot was taken to the hospital with a minor head injury. The other person in the Cessna 510 Citation Mustang was not hurt.
Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Tony Imbrenda said the plane experienced difficulties prior to the attempted takeoff. About 5 to 10 gallons (38 liters) of fuel spilled, he said.
Cramer says it’s not yet known what caused the plane’s issues at the airport, which is about 14 miles (22 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles.
The lieutenant says police were called to the airport around 11:15 a.m. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified of the incident.
Police have not released the names of the pilot or co-pilot.

EL MONTE, California (KABC) -- A plane crashed to the ground and two people inside escaped with their lives in El Monte Saturday.
The Cessna 510 Citation Mustang crashed at the San Gabriel Valley Airport in El Monte shortly after 11 a.m.
Los Angeles County Fire says the plane went off the runway during takeoff and slammed into a fence at the end of the runway.
The pilot and one passenger were aboard. Paramedics took both to the hospital with only minor injuries.

Had 3,995' long runway at 296' msl. I would think this would have been sufficient unless aircraft wasn't configured properly for takeoff. It's amazing they weren't seriously hurt.

ReplyDeleteAircraft operated from KEMT for years without issue. Two Citation Sovereigns based there as well. Airport is basically an urban island with limited runoff space at the end of either runway. 1WH usually was airborne by halfway down the rwy. Definitely either pilot error or mechanical failure; density altitude at the time was not sufficient to effect the t/o roll to that degree.
