As the Airshow of the Cascades finished up its second day, a single-engine airplane, being flown by a 55-year-old pilot from Sandy, took off from the Madras Municipal Airport, departing from runway 34.

Shortly after takeoff, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Adkins, the engine quit, forcing the pilot to make "a safe, controlled, wheels-up landing on Northwest Elm Lane, about 7 miles north of Madras."

Deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the Jefferson County Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, as well as airport personnel, responded to the scene.

"With the use of a helpful farmer's haying equipment, the airplane was lifted so the landing gear could be lowered," Adkins noted. "The airplane was towed back to the Madras airport."

The pilot, who was not injured, was a spectator at the Airshow of the Cascades.
