Pope County Sheriff Shane Jones said a man flying a small airplane had to make an emergency landing Saturday in a field near Appleton and was not  injured.

Jones said the pilot, who was the only occupant of the single-engine, two-seat Cessna, had engine problems and was forced to land near Mount Zion Road West near Appleton on Saturday morning.

Authorities were dispatched just after 10 a.m. and included the Appleton Fire Department, Hector First Responders, Pope County Sheriff’s Office, Pope County EMS and the Arkansas State Police.

Jones said the man was making a return flight from Tulsa, Okla., back to Memphis, Tenn. He was not seriously injured. The plane received minimal damage, the sheriff said.

“Basically, it was a little hard landing,” he said.

Jones said officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been notified of the incident. The FAA instructed them to leave the aircraft at the scene. Jones said they will take over the investigation when they arrive, possibly today.
