JACKSON -- At its recent annual conference, the Mississippi Airports Association (MAA) named Michael P. (Mike) Hainsey its Professional of the Year. Hainsey has been the executive director of the Golden Triangle Regional Airport for 12 years.

Nominations for the award come from the membership at large. The candidates are evaluated based on their leadership and contribution to the betterment of aviation in Mississippi and their communities as well as their impact on a national scale.

"It was an honor to present this award to someone as worthy as Mike," said MAA immediate past president Bill Cotter. "Not only has he shown leadership within our organization, but he has also been an outstanding representative of our state on the national level."

Hainsey serves as the chair of the American Association of Airport Executives' Air Service Committee. He also chaired the Aviation Cooperative Research Program's (ACRP) Panel on Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operations at Airports; the ACRP is part of the National Academy of Science. In 2008, Hainsey was named the FAA Commercial Air Service Airport Manager of the Year.

Hainsey is well respected for his efforts to promote economic development in the Golden Triangle, which comprises the cities of Columbus, Starkville and West Point.

"Mike played an integral role in the development of the first Lowndes County Megasite, which is currently home to Steel Dynamics Inc.," notes Mike Bogue, vice president of APAC-Mississippi, Inc., who is one of the individuals who put Hainsey's name forth for the award.

"He also presented creative property solutions for the project that secured the selection of Lowndes County by PACCAR Engine Company."

Hainsey has served as a member of the Golden Triangle Development LINK's board of directors and is a permanent member of its advisory council.

At the state level, Hainsey has served as the president of the Mississippi Airports Association and Mississippi Intermodal Council and served on the board of the Mississippi Military Communities Council. He recently was appointed by Governor Phil Bryant to the Board of Directors of the Aerospace Alliance, a four-state organization dedicated to economic development in the aviation arena.

He is Founder and CEO of Dreams on Wings, a charity that provides the thrill of flight to children facing serious illnesses and their families.

In addition, he has been named the Catch-a-Dream Volunteer Host of the Year and the Angel Flight Southeast Pilot of the Year.
