Winter Haven's Gilbert Airport (KGIF), Polk County, Florida: Airport improvements

The City Commission is slated to vote on approving a joint participation agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration to enhance lighting and add signage on the taxiways and runway at the Winter Haven Municipal Airport.

The changes are intended to enhance safety.

“The lack of lighting causes the runway to be problematic,” City Manager Mike Herr said during a workshop on Wednesday night.

The estimated cost for design and construction of the project is $500,000, but only $10,000, or 2 percent, would be paid by the city. FAA would cover $450,000 or 90 percent of the cost. The other $40,000 or 8 percent, would be paid for by FDOT.
