WESTERLY — Emergency responders provided assistance at Westerly Airport Wednesday afternoon after a plane attempting to land in the northwestern corner of the airport missed the runway before coming to rest in a grassy area beside the tarmac.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which took place shortly after 2 p.m., and officials confirmed that damage to the plane was limited to the landing gear.

Westerly police, fire and ambulance personnel responded as a precaution, but units were quickly cleared after it was determined there was no emergency.
From this section:

According to early reports, the plane was approaching the airport from over the Stop & Shop at Westerly Crossing and missed the runway while landing. The name of the pilot and/or owner of the plane has not been released.

The incident, paired with a minor two-car accident moments later along Airport Road in front of the entrance to the airport and adjacent Westerly Police Department, led to a traffic backup for approximately 45 minutes. No injuries were reported in the crash.
