Lawsuit filed over 2015 airshow in Mason City, Iowa

MASON CITY, Iowa – A Mitchell County woman claims she was injured during a 2015 airshow at the Mason City Municipal Airport.

Joyce Melcher of Osage and her husband Gayle have filed a lawsuit against Iowa Aviation Promotion Group, Inc., the Mason City airport and Claude Sears, owner of Airshow Sound.

Joyce Melcher says when she and her husband were attending the Fly Iowa 2015 Airshow on June 26, a gust of wind from a plane propeller caused a loud speaker to fall to the ground.

Joyce Melcher says she was knocked down by the speaker and suffered significant injury.

The lawsuit is claiming negligence by the defendants, specifically that they failed to safely secure the speaker in place and warn spectators of the risk of injury.

The Melchers are suing for medical expenses, lost wages, physical and mental pain and suffering, loss of full use of mind and body and loss of spousal consortium.
