Authorities seized $1 million in cash and a private airplane at Martin State Airport in Middle River after officials noticed "suspicious activity" Tuesday evening from the recently landed plane, federal agents said.
Bundles of cash were discovered on the plane, authorities said.
"We have inflicted a significant hit on the criminal organizations," Special Agent Andre Watson, who led the response for the investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement. "We will continue to target their illicit cash."
Criminal groups use a network of smuggling operations to move illicit cash around the country.
Smugglers use planes, trains, boats and trucks to move the cash from the trafficking of drugs, guns and people.
Targeting the cash is one of the most effective tools against such crimes, authorities said.
Smuggling is punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison and seizure of all money.

Officials said K-9 units searched the plane's exterior and baggage area and found several bundles of cash.
