Air India has had another embarrassing incident.
A tire burst on one of the national carrier’s Airbus A320 jetliners soon after it landed in Mumbai’s international airport on Tuesday evening, forcing an emergency evacuation of the plane.
None of the 160 passengers on board the plane suffered any injuries, said an Air India spokesman.
“After landing, while the aircraft was taxiing, there was a tire burst and as a consequence, there was smoke,” the spokesman said.
The plane was on a domestic flight from the western Indian city of Nagpur to Mumbai. The aircraft was more than 20 years old.
Air India—an early customer for the A320—acquired the Classic type of A320 planes between 1989 and 1993. It still has 15 such aircraft.
The airline has had a spate of trouble in the past year. In December, a member of its ground crew died after being sucked into the aircraft engine. Earlier, an Air India plane had to make an emergency landing after its cockpit windscreen cracked. And in September, one of its flight suffered a hydraulic failure while landing in New Delhi.
