Brumby 610 Evolution: Accident occurred January 08, 2016 near Goulburn, Southern Tablelands, New South Wales, Australia

A Robertson pilot is incredibly lucky to have walked away from a fiery plane crash this afternoon.

The Brumby 610 Evolution had begun taking off when it crashed and caught fire.

Police said the pilot and sole occupant, a 78-year-old man, was able to leave the plane himself and did not require medical treatment.

The plane was destroyed.

A NSW ambulance spokesman told Yahoo7 News the man did not require an ambulance or help from paramedics.

A police spokeswoman told Yahoo7 the plane crashed on an airstrip near the edge of the Hume Highway on Munroe Rd.

Witness, Ian, was driving along the Hume Highway towards Sydney when he saw the plane erupt into a 'ball of flames'.

He saw people rush towards the plane and try to pull out those inside.

"I saw a burst of flames and looked beside me and the plane was in a ball of flames," he told 7 News.

"The last thing you want to see is a plane crash into a ball of fire on the side of the road.

"It's the last thing you expect to see."

A pilot has escaped unhurt after his light plane crashed and caught fire north of Goulburn in the New South Wales southern tablelands.

Emergency services were called to a private air strip near Marulan about 6:00pm where the aircraft had crashed during takeoff.

The single occupant of the plane, a 78-year-old man from Robertson, got out of the wreckage himself and did not need medical treatment.

Police said the Brumby 610 Evolution was completely destroyed.

The Rural Fire Service said a grass fire they were battling at the air strip, near the Hume Highway between Goulburn and Marulan, was now under control.

Police and NSW Fire and Rescue crews were at the crash scene.

An investigation into the crash is being carried out by Recreational Aviation Australia.
