A loaded firearm was discovered in a carry-on bag at Myrtle Beach International Airport Sunday, Dec. 20, according to Mark J. Howell, regional spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA.)
The loaded .38 caliber handgun was found around 1:30 p.m. at a security checkpoint.
Allan George Querubin, 46, of Marion, was arrested for carrying a concealable weapon into a posted place, according to the Horry County public index.
TSA immediately alerted airport police, who took possession of the bag and arrested the passenger on state charges.
According to a police report, the gun was found in a black backpack and had six rounds in it.
Querubin told police that he had received an emergency call from his boss who informed him he had to make an immediate flight to Mexico for a job emergency, according to the police report.
He the told police he quickly packed his luggage, grabbed his backpack and went to the airport and forgot that the gun was inside.
While firearms may be transported in checked baggage (provided they are declared to the airline, in a proper carrying case and unloaded), they are prohibited in carry-on bags.
In a news release, TSA officials reminded passengers that it is important for them to thoroughly search their bags for any potential dangerous weapons or prohibited items before departing for the airport.
Safety is the first concern of the TSA, and having these items in bags that are traveling with you on the aircraft is dangerous to other travelers and can be easily mistaken as an intentional attempt to bring a prohibited item onto an aircraft.
"Passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the checkpoint," said Mark Howell, TSA Regional Spokesperson. "Our advice is to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items."
This is the fourth firearm discovered at the security checkpoint by TSA officers at MYR in 2015.
A total of three were found at MYR in calendar year 2014.
Querubin is still in custody. No bond has been set as of noon Dec. 21.
