India-bound flight diverted back to Toronto, Canada, after flight attendant assaulted

Police respond to an incident aboard a Toronto-to-India Air Canada flight, Wednesday, December 30, 2015. (NOTE: The man standing in this photo was NOT the passenger that was arrested.)

An Alberta man is facing charges after a flight attendant was assaulted early Wednesday, forcing an Air Canada flight bound for New Delhi to return back to Toronto.

Police say a 47-year-old man was arrested and charged after “assaultive and belligerent behavior towards a flight attendant” while aboard Flight AC70.

Witnesses said the disruptive passenger used abusive language during the incident, which happened just after 12:30 a.m., as the plane was travelling over the east coast.

The plane diverted back to Pearson International Airport, where Peel police took the man into custody.

The diversion wasn’t the first headache for passengers on this particular flight. The plane was initially scheduled to take off on Tuesday but it was delayed by poor weather.

AC70 passenger Manveer Kaur, who is trying to get back home to India, said she wasn’t near the alleged incident, but recalled seeing a crew member’s finger bleeding.

Speaking with reporters at the airport on Wednesday, Kaur described the whole situation as “really” bad.

“We’re so tired,” she said. “I don’t know what is going on.”

The flight is expected to depart from Pearson International Airport midday on Wednesday.

Jaskaran Sidhu, 47, of Alberta, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with two counts of mischief, assault causing bodily harm and endangering the safety of an aircraft.

Police are asking anyone with information to call investigators at the Airport Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at 905-453–2121, ext. 3133.  Information may also be left anonymously by calling Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

TORONTO — A 47-year-old Alberta man has been charged after an incident on board an Air Canada flight en route to India was diverted back to Toronto early Wednesday morning.

Peel Regional police say a man allegedly assaulted a flight attendant, who needed medical attention for her injuries, around 12:42 a.m. when the flight was over the Atlantic Ocean, just off the east coast.

They say the man was belligerent at the time, but they arrested him without incident when the plane landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

The flight was initially scheduled to take off earlier Tuesday but poor weather prompted Air Canada to postpone the flight shortly after the plane made it to the runway.

The flight is now scheduled to leave Pearson International Airport at noon today.

Jaskaran Sidhu has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, endangering the safety of an aircraft and two counts of mischief.

He is scheduled to appear in a Brampton, Ont., court Wednesday.
