Kiwi woman groped mid-flight believes airline showed a lack of compassion

Fiso Fiso
A Hutt Valley woman accusing Air NZ of lacking compassion after she was groped mid-flight is vowing never to fly with them again.

Three years after she was attacked by a drunk fellow passenger, the 25-year-old expressed concern to Air NZ earlier this year that the company had never checked on her well-being since the incident or contacted her about any internal investigation.

The airline replied it was sorry to hear of her experience, assured her an internal investigation had occurred, and offered special care in future.

The woman, who did not want to be named, labelled the response pitiful.

"If a thorough investigation was done why wasn't I called? Why wasn't I checked up on? Why did my mum and myself have to contact them for a response?"

Following the attack in 2012, Sydney orchard worker Fiso Fiso, 39, was fined $1500 for groping the woman's genitals and cleavage while she was drowsy from anti-anxiety medication on a flight from Sydney to Wellington.

Fiso originally went to his seat but moved to one behind where the victim was sitting alone.

She alerted crew after he began touching her, and they informed police who were waiting for Fiso when the plane landed.

The victim said: "Yes, they did all the appropriate things on board, I do not doubt that.  However no action was taken afterward at all once I got off that flight."

"The [anxiety] issues that followed for me even years after have been huge, and for them to not take responsibility and admit that it was poorly handled is silly....get sexually abused on a flight and they don't even check on your well-being afterward."

An Air NZ representative said Fiso Fiso did not appear to be intoxicated upon boarding the aircraft.

"This incident was reviewed internally and the crew took the appropriate action in re-seating this passenger and alerting the police to attend the aircraft on arrival.

"When this customer contacted our customer relations team earlier this year, we advised that if she chose to travel again with Air New Zealand we would do everything possible to ensure a comfortable journey."
