Electrical Upgrade Of Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport (KLAW) Runway Nearing Completion

A major project underway for almost a year should be winding down in the next few weeks, the governing board for Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport said.

Rural Electric has been provided a punch list for a $997,000 project that modernized the runway electrical system, Airport Director Barbara McNally told members of the Lawton Metropolitan Area Airport Authority Tuesday.

The project, which began late last year, upgraded lights on the airport's runway and also added a beacon and installed or repaired signs and runway end identification lights, among other tasks.

Brett Lewis, chairman of the airport authority's development committee, said the punch list items are minor items that don't involve safety concerns, noting that it includes work to straighten the rotating beacon (the structure leans slightly, Lewis said) and work to remove ruts in an adjacent field.

McNally said the work can be accomplished in a few weeks, as soon as Rural Electric gets a crew on the ground.

A second electrical-related project won't begin before the beginning of the year.

Earlier this year, Patco Electric won a contract to install an emergency generator in the airport terminal, the only area of the airport that doesn't have a generator for emergency power outages.

Patco bid $192,416 for the generator, and McNally said that generator should be installed in January.
