Piper PA-24-260 Comanche, N8856P: Incident occurred September 24, 2015 in Davie, Broward County, Florida

Pilot motivated by twin daughters during emergency landing

Davie, Fla. (WZZM) - Twelve-year-old twins Carly and Ashley Richmond say they know their father is a good pilot.

"Yea, he's good," confirms Carly.

So the girls say they aren't surprised 58-year-old Scott Richmond of Comstock Park made a successful emergency landing Thursday morning on a busy Florida freeway.

"He's been flying for a while, and that is probably why he did so well," suggests Ashley.

While flying from Michigan to south Florida on a business trip, Richmond says his single engine prop plane ran out of gas.

"She sputtered and quit," he explains. "She ran out of fuel."

While looking for a place to land on the freeway jammed with rush hour traffic, Richmond says he thought about his twins back home.

"I got two beautiful, twin 12-year-old daughters," he told reporters. "They are not ready. They aren't ready to be alone."

"At first I was worried," says Carly. "But he is okay."

"Good job," Ashley says with a smile.

Initial reports indicate Richmond had enough fuel to land, but on approach he was waved off to permit a jet with higher priority use the runway. While circling the airport waiting for clearance he ran out of fuel. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
