PEOSTA, Iowa -- No one was injured this morning when a pilot flying a small, single-engine plane made an emergency landing on a rural Peosta road.
The pilot, Adam Maritz, of California, was in the middle of a trip from that state to Illinois when he saw smoke in the cockpit, he and law enforcement reported. In response, he shut off his avionics equipment -- a move that prompted Dubuque Regional Airport staff to alert emergency responders since they lost contact with the plane.
Maritz found a stretch of Cox Springs Road without nearby power lines and landed the plane, which he then drove into a nearby parking lot. Maritz was the only occupant of the plane.
He was not injured, and no property damage has been reported.
