The jet set can get bargains at Tesco -City Spy

Roll up, roll up, one and all, it’s the Tesco private-jet fire sale.

City Spy asked a man who buys and sells the playthings of the corporate giants to give us the lowdown about the supermarket’s now-unwanted fleet  of jets.

First there’s the recently delivered Gulfstream 550, which costs around $50 million (£31 million) when it’s brand new.

Buyers at the top of the market, who almost certainly don’t shop in the stores, may be interested. With such a toxic asset sitting in the hangar, it could be the bargain of the year.

This plane needs to go before new chief executive Dave Lewis’s reputation sinks even more quickly than the share price. Yours for  £25 million?

Next is a Hawker 800. It’s an older plane registered in 1998, according to our man, but might find a buyer for something in the region of £4 million-£4.5 million. Maybe something for the aspiring FTSE 250 boss?

How about a Cessna Citation 7? Tesco has two of these up for sale, registered in 2001 and 2002. It’s a smaller-cabin aircraft, apparently, so more suited to European travel, but they’re still likely to fetch £3 million each. Perhaps the supermarket will do you a two-for-one deal, says Spy’s man in the hangar.

And lastly, there’s a Beechcraft King Air. This one’s a turboprop and it’s getting on a bit. “Best not to use this one if you’re looking to impress a rival boss, but this is the one to sling the clubs in and head up to Scotland for the golfing weekend,” reports the private-jet man, who reckons  £1.5 million would be a fair price.

Every little helps!
