Typhoon jet's night flying wakes Sleaford residents - UK

Sleepy Sleaford residents were woken up last Thursday night when noisy aircraft from RAF Coningsby rumbled overhead in the middle of the night.

Hundreds took to social media to query what the noise was at around midnight.

It was rumored that the Eurofighter Typhoon jets from RAF Coningsby were out on quick reaction alert, which is when the jets are scrambled within minutes to meet or intercept aircraft entering UK airspace that have given cause for concern.

Layla Atkin said: “Well that plane woke me and my whole house up and I bet a few others too.”

Amy Cockcroft said: “I don’t normally complain but it was really loud – I don’t like them low-flying over houses.”

Kieran Conlon said: “I don’t understand why the pilot had to do so many circuits above the town especially at that time of night. If the pilot was on his way back to Coningsby then he may have had to hold until cleared to land.”

And Marie Brackenbury said: “It was very loud, it scared the life out of me for a moment last night, I was pleased it wasn’t going to crash into the house like it sounded. I guess they have to know how to handle/fly the planes in the dark too.”

But Wg Cdr Martin Tinworth, RAF spokesman, said: “Our aircraft did carry out some night flying last Thursday. The noise heard was from aircraft returning from routine operational duties.”

In June this year a flight of Eurofighter Typhoon jets scrambled from RAF Coningsby and caused a sonic boom over Peterborough.

The jets had been ordered to go supersonic – breaking to the sound barrier and causing a sonic boom over the Cambridgeshire city.

The jets had been launched from quick reaction alert to investigate a civilian aircraft that had lost radio contact with air traffic control.
