Airport tax proposal heads to State Bond Commission: Lafayette Regional (KLFT), Louisiana

Lafayette Regional Airport's request to place a temporary 1-cent sales tax on the Dec. 6 ballot heads to the State Bond Commission on Oct. 16 for approval, according to Matt Cruse, Airport Commission chairman.

Once the bond commission approves the tax call, the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office will send the commission the ballot to review and approve, Cruse said. Once that happens, the Dec. 6 ballot will be finalized, he said.

Airport officials hope voters parish wide will approve a 1-cent sales tax to be collected from April 1, 2015, through Nov. 30, 2015. The tax would generate about $37 million toward the estimated $90 million cost of the project.

Plans are to build a new terminal with added gates and updated amenities, including expanded parking. The current terminal was built about 55 years ago and remodeled about 25 years ago.

If the tax is approved, construction could begin in 2016 and the new terminal could be in operation in 2018.
