A captain with major airline All Nippon Airways Co. posted an abusive comment on a rival company’s Facebook page, triggering an official apology by his employer on Monday.
“Bankrupt and tax-sustained company, don’t get carried away,” read the comment, posted Saturday morning on the official Facebook page of Japan Airlines Co.
JAL had offered a public apology the previous day over a glitch in its cargo weight management system that forced the airline to cancel more than 170 flights.
The post was deleted after a page follower revealed the identity of the male pilot — who is in his 40s and flies Boeing 777s — in a subsequent post.
ANA apologized over the matter on Monday, but JAL said it has no comment.
“Although the comment was posted in the employee’s private capacity, we are sorry for offending the feeling of the public,” an ANA official said.
JAL went bankrupt in January 2010 and later received ¥350 billion in a taxpayer-funded rescue package. The amount was fully paid back in September 2012 when JAL was re-listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
