Saturday, May 10: Trenton-Mercer Airport (KTTN) to hold full-scale disaster exercise

TRENTON, N.J.-Trenton-Mercer Airport will conduct a full-scale emergency exercise on airport grounds Saturday, May 10, 9:45 a.m., in order to train for a real-life disaster and to meet Federal Aviation Administration requirements.

This full-scale exercise is required by the FAA to be held once every three years. The scenario for this exercise is a crash by low-level wind shear. Attendees will be able to see various emergency services respond to the aircraft, care for the "injured," and secure the "scene." A command post, a joint information center, and an emergency operations center will also be established to direct the response. Responders from more than two dozen government and volunteer agencies will be taking part in this exercise, along with airport staff, County personnel, and many volunteers.

The purpose of this exercise is to take a regionalized approach to coordination of a response to a major disaster, increase the effectiveness of the airport's response in a real emergency, and to make changes to the airport's disaster response protocols if necessary.

WHAT:  Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes, local elected officials, and FAA to observe Trenton-Mercer airport personnel, law enforcement agencies, and emergency responders conduct a full-scale disaster exercise. Media access is to the VIP tent areas only.

WHEN: Arrive by 9:45 a.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014. Exercise begins at 10 a.m. on airport grounds.

WHERE: The drill will take place at the Trenton-Mercer Airport's New Jersey Army National Guard (NJANG) Hangar located at 152 Scotch Road, Ewing NJ. Take Exit 3A from Interstate 95 South. Go straight through the traffic light. The NJANG Hangar will be 1 mile on the right, directly prior to the railroad underpass.
