Jetstar flight diverts to central Queensland after passengers smell fumes

A Jetstar flight has been diverted to an airport in central Queensland after a mid-air incident.

Jetstar officials say an Airbus A320 was traveling from Cairns to Sydney on Sunday night when passengers seated in the front of the plane complained of strong-smelling fumes.

Jetstar says as a precaution the captain alerted air traffic controllers and the aircraft with 132 passengers on-board was diverted to Rockhampton airport.

Emergency services were placed on standby, however, the plane touched down safety just after 9pm (AEST).

Jetstar says passengers have been offered accommodation at hotels and motels for the night while engineers assess the plane and search for the cause of the fumes.

They say alternative travel arrangements will be made for the stranded passengers tomorrow morning.
