Plane spotters miss flights: Auckland Airport

Some of the best areas for watching planes arriving and departing Auckland Airport, including the two viewing decks on Puhinui Rd, will be closed tomorrow morning.

A no stopping zone will also be in place from Campana Rd.

That's because the airport is running an exercise to test its response to a plane crashing into the Manukau Harbour.

Airport compliance and quality assurance manager Roy Robertson says public safety along Puhinui Rd is a major priority during the exercise.

"If someone is gawking and then has an accident, that's not what it's about."

Mr Robertson says the viewing platforms will be closed from 7am and hopefully reopen by 12.30pm.

Auckland Airport Emergency Services, St John Ambulance, Fire Service and police are among the groups involved.
